Description

GMC Metal Lathe Tooling and Accessory Lot
4-Jaw Independent Lathe Chuck

Description: Heavy-duty 4-jaw independent chuck, likely 12"–16" diameter. Each jaw is adjusted separately for precise centering of irregular or square workpieces.
Function: Used for holding and rotating workpieces on a metal lathe. Each jaw moves independently, allowing for off-center turning and accurate alignment.
Applications: Ideal for machining square, rectangular, or irregularly shaped materials that cannot be gripped evenly in a 3-jaw chuck.
Common Size Range: 10"–18" diameters depending on lathe model.
Mount Type: Typically D1 or L-type camlock or threaded backplate depending on lathe model (GMC lathes often use D1-6 or D1-8).

3-Jaw Self-Centering Chuck
Description: A standard 3-jaw scroll chuck visible in the background — jaws move simultaneously for automatically centering round or hexagonal stock.
Function: Commonly used for general turning where centering speed is more important than perfect concentric accuracy.
Applications: Round bars, pipes, and symmetrical parts.
Size Range: Typically 8"–12".

Faceplate
Description: Large round flat plate with radial T-slots or holes for clamping irregular parts directly to the lathe spindle.
Function: Holds non-cylindrical or oversized workpieces that cannot fit in a chuck.
Applications: Custom or one-off jobs requiring unusual clamping setups.

Steady Rest
Description: The U-shaped metal component with three adjustable brass-tipped fingers.
Function: Supports long workpieces during turning operations to prevent vibration or deflection.
Applications: Used when machining shafts, bars, or tubes that extend far from the chuck.

Follower Rest
Description: Similar to the steady rest but mounts directly to the lathe carriage and travels with the cutting tool.
Function: Provides continuous support directly behind the cutting tool to prevent bending on long slender workpieces.

Change Gears (Lathe Gear Train)
Description: The visible gear pair (spur gears) used in threading and feed operations.
Function: Allows the operator to change feed rates or thread pitches by swapping gear combinations.
Applications: Precision threading and feed control in manual lathes.
